
Julie London (nee Peck) was an American actor and singer who toured for more than 40 years. London is a torch singer known for her soft, mellow vocals and smooth contralto voice, recorded more than thirty albums of standards and jazz between 1955-1969. The album she released as her debut "Cry Me a River", which she recorded was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. London was also nominated in 1974 for the Golden Globe Award for her character as Dixie McCall, a nurse on Emergency! London was born in Santa Rosa to vaudevillian parents. Her acting career began as an actress , while she was an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles. London's 35-year-long acting career began in 1944 , with roles in films. These included roles as the lead female role in many westerns. Also, she starred with Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951), John Cassavetes and Robert Taylor in Saddle the Wind (1958), Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) as well as Robert Mitchum with The Wonderful Country (1959). In the mid-50s she signed a recording contract with Liberty Records. This was the beginning of her professional music career. In 1969, she released her last studio album. But, she continued to be prominent in the emergency show in the role of Dixie McCall, a female nurse. (1972-1979), where she was a co-star along with Bobby Troup. The show was produced by her former husband Jack Webb.
